How to Make a Payment on your Canadian Tire Bank Issued Credit Card

As a primary card member, you can pay your bill through the Triangle App, your Online Account on ctfs.com, through your financial institution (online or in-branch), at any Canadian Tire Store, or by mail via cheque.

How to Open a Savings Account

Canadian Tire Bank offers a suite of Savings Products to help you reward yourself and watch your money grow.

As part of the account opening process, you will need the following information. This will help make the process go smoothly for you!

• Access to your external banking account details (account number, transit number, etc.) as we will require that information in the Direct Transfer Authorization Form (DTA Form) included in the instruction kit to fund your new account. You can find this on your cheques.
• Your Social Insurance Number (SIN). We need your SIN because Revenue Canada requires that it be included on any tax receipts we send to you.
• A completed Declaration of Tax Residence for Individuals form. This form will be provided to you in your Instruction package.

Power of Attorney and Joint Deposit Accounts

What is a Power of Attorney?

A Power of Attorney (“POA”) is a legal document that you sign to give one or more persons the authority to manage your money and property on your behalf. In most of Canada, the person you appoint is called an “Attorney”. The person you choose does not have to be a lawyer.

Among other requirements, you must be mentally capable at the time you sign any type of POA for it to be valid. As the legal definition of mental capacity varies based on the laws in each province or territory, it may be advantageous to seek legal council in this regard. You also can make changes to or cancel a POA at any time, as long as you are mentally capable.

Canadian Tire Bank cannot provide legal advice to customers about POAs.

Does Canadian Tire Bank offer its own form of POA to customers?

No, Canadian Tire Bank does not offer its own standard POA template. Canadian Tire Bank will accept a valid POA if it complies with the statutory requirements of the province/territory where it was executed.

What are Canadian Tire Bank’s minimum requirements for a POA?

Canadian Tire Bank will only accept an original or a notarized copy of a POA. Canadian Tire Bank will not accept a photocopy, facsimile or scanned copy of a POA.

In order to comply with customer identification requirements, CTB requires the appointed Attorney to complete a POA Identification Form in the presence of a guarantor.

How long will it take for Canadian Tire Bank to review a POA?

Upon receipt of a POA, Canadian Tire Bank will review the document to confirm that it:

1. Complies with the statutory requirements of the province/territory where it was executed;
2. It is an original or notarized copy; and
3. It is accompanied by a completed and signed POA Identification Form that meets government photo identification and guarantor requirements.

If further information is required, Canadian Tire Bank will contact the customer and/or appointed Attorney and advise what additional information is required.

Canadian Tire Bank aims to review all POAs within approximately thirty (30) business days; however, in some situations a further review may be required. If there are any delays in the review, Canadian Tire Bank will inform the customer and/or Attorney and advise of the expected time frame as to when the review will be completed.

Please note Canadian Tire Bank reserves the right to refuse to act on a POA or an appointed Attorney’s instructions.

What is a Joint Deposit Account?

A Joint Deposit Account (“JDA”) is a bank account in which two or more people have ownership rights over the same account. These rights can include the right for all account holders to deposit, withdraw or deal with the funds in the account, no matter who puts the money into the account.

As a JDA holder, you share equal access to the account and responsibility for all the transactions made through the account. In most cases, unless you state otherwise, the other account holder(s) can make transactions without your consent.

In many cases, JDAs include the right of survivorship. This means that if one of the account holders dies, the surviving account holder(s) become(s) the owner(s) of the account.

Canadian Tire Bank supports operator assisted calls with telephone relay services such as Bell Relay. Language Line Services

Priority Telephone Services

We are pleased to offer a priority telephone service to customers that are 75 years or older. You will automatically be moved to the front of the queue when calling to speak with a representative about your Canadian Tire Bank Mastercard account.

Protect Yourself Against Financial Abuse

Financial abuse is any act involving the misuse of a person’s money or property without their full knowledge and consent. The abuser could be a stranger, but it could also be a family member, friend or neighbour.

Here are some common methods of financial abuse and some helpful tips to help prevent becoming a victim.

Identity Theft

Identity theft occurs when a fraudster steals personal information from someone so they can pretend to be that person and then do things like apply for a credit card, take out a loan or mortgage, get a cell phone or withdraw bank funds. The fraudster will try to get information such as a bank card number and personal identity number (PIN), credit card number, health card number, driver's license and Social Insurance Number (SIN). Sometimes they will steal or copy the documents; sometimes all they need is the information. If your wallet or purse is lost or stolen and/or you believe your information may be compromised, or if mail you are expecting goes missing, contact our Customer Service Departments immediately for assistance.

Credit Card Fraud

Credit card fraud occurs when a fraudster uses your card, or a copy, to make purchases or withdraw money from your account. Keeping your card in sight, selecting a PIN that is easy to remember by you but hard to guess by others, memorizing your PIN, and shielding your hand when you enter your PIN are ways you can reduce the risk of your credit card or debit card information being stolen and misused.

Online Scams

New online scams appear all the time. In some instances, the fraudster will ask for your help; some will say that there is a problem with your bank account or tax return. Scam e-mails are often easy to spot because of spelling and other mistakes, but some can look like they are coming from a person or organization you know. If you are not sure about an e-mail for example, if it asks you respond with personal or financial information or to go to another Website and enter information there – call to check, and do not respond to the e-mail.

Romance Scams

In a romance scam, fraudsters create online profiles and pose as romance or companionship seekers to attract individuals looking for a relationship. The relationship is maintained through online communication and progresses with the victim developing an emotional attachment to the fake online persona. As the victim trusts the persona, the fraudster shares a fabricated story that leads to asking for financial assistance. Once the fraudster obtains the victim’s money, they will cut off all contact with the victim. If you aren’t completely sure who you are dealing with, do not give the person any money. Do not share your personal or financial information with anyone that you have met online.

Telephone and Door-to-Door Scams

Telephone and door-to-door scams are also very common. Someone will call or come to your door pretending to be a representative of a charity or government organization, an employee of a credit card company, or even a distant relative. You might be offered a free prize or trip. If you aren't completely sure who you are dealing with, do not give the person any money or information.

Grandparent Scam

Grandparent scams (also called grandchild scams) are common scams that target seniors. These scams usually involve a telephone call from someone who pretends to be your grandchild. If you get a call like this, be prepared: the scammer may already know your grandchild’s name and what your grandchild calls you (for example, a nickname like Nona or Grampy). Acting as your grandchild, the scammer claims to be in trouble and asks for your help. The scammer may try to convince you that your grandchild was in a car accident or has been arrested. You may be asked to wire money right away, without telling anyone. If you receive a call like this, do not wire the money or give the caller any further information. Hang up and call your grandchild, or another family member, to find out what’s really going on.

Protect your Personal Identification Number (PIN)

Your PIN and password are the keys to your account; make sure you choose a PIN or password that is easy to remember by you but hard to guess by others. Do not share your PIN or password with anyone. For added protection, try covering your hand when entering in your PIN number; this will prevent others from seeing it.

Protect your credit cards

Sign credit cards as soon as you receive them. Cancel inactive cards and don't lend your credit cards to anybody.
